Seems to knock, but dealer says all is OK.

I am hopeful that the S4 will not have any problems in the future. I don't drive the car that much and my warranty will expire long before I reach the mileage limit, so I will be sol if something breaks.

2 turbo failures for me :) these turbos kick ass and audi did an awesome job with the design of this engine.. NOT
S4 2.7T Tiptronic
Yes
Turbo Failure happened gradually, starting with a distinctly different sound under boost, sort of like a kazoo.

I am patiently waiting to chip my car. My initial thought has been to go with an ABT chip and a milltek cat back exhaust. Any thoughts?
S4 2.7T 6-speed manual
No
Car had not had one problem.

I have tracked the car for 1 event out of curiousity. Hey it's an auto - even though I also have a Race ECU for the tranny, it's still not the best for track :-( Only changed to synthetic after I hit 10,000 miles and got turbo serin noise within 3 miles from dealer. I think it was because I used M1 15-50 - should have use M1 5-30. I now have M1 5-40. I don't know what the best oil is though. I don't use a drop of oil at all! BTW, I was chipped since 1,000 after breakin - torn TBB at 1,400 - replaced with L - no problems, except for an engine check lite at about 24,000 - they said it was a misfire and a bad MAF. Car is just great!

Turbo failure due to interference between heat shield and wastegate linkage.

Blew the turbos twice until I realized one should wait till Oil temp warmed up. After that, no blown turbos. Both blows were police-siren noise, not loud.

I have had my car since 9/99 and it was a very early build 7/99. I am chipped with a full set of samco hoses, Forge BPV, UUC short shifter, stoptech's, I track often (have done about 12-13 events with my S4 including Pocono Long, Pocono East, Pocono North, Limerock, Homestead, Sebring, Moroso. Except for warped stock brakes, blown washer pump, and a split tbb my car has been great. It has a stage II Tap chip and supersprint exhaust. (Tap is a lot better than people think, it's even, strong, and doesn't over boost my turbo's. Since there not widely used, people have the tendency to rule out TAP. I have raced apr, mtm, and abt and I have not been beat yet. (most were pretty even, head to head.) I do worry about the potential of a blown turbo especially because I have an early build but so far, so good. Hope this helps..
S4 2.7T 6-speed manual
Yes
Car no longer in existence
S4 2.7T 6-speed manual

Tear of TBB caused overspin of turbo. Also, the tear in the TBB was possibly caused by leaky (according to technican) Bailey valves, causing back charge on the left side turbocharger.

APR chipped & changed BOV (Bailey's) at 10k

still running strong. Paranoia attacks occasionally (usually bolstered by some AW postings).
S4 2.7T 6-speed manual

Discovered failure in one stock BPV when I replaced them with Forge BPVs at 8K miles. Quite possible that I drove with faulty BPV for ~5K miles. Car was chipped at 10K miles and currently has 11K. Heard siren sound ONCE since chipping. It went away (keeping fingers crossed).
S4 2.7T 6-speed manual

I had TBB failures, but no Turbo failure

MY 10/00 does not have an F hose.. I have been chipped off and on (can't say how many chipped miles the car has as it is stock right now) I have run a best of 13.5 with the chip, stock BPV's and catback.. I don't track alot but I do like to have fun.. I don't bang it off the rev limiter and usually shift right after 6K..

Siren noises from turbos since the day I installed 1.0 bar software upgrade(1000 miles). After doing several full throttle runs, began hearing whirring sounds. Much louder when cold. After installing aftermarket DV's(at 5000 miles) noticed alot more top end power leading me to believe stock valves where leaking.

I have a Neuspeed 1.0 bar chip (for 12,700 of the car's 13,700 miles), the AMS reinforced TBB (just installed; stock TBB did not fail however, and looked perfect when I removed it), and aluminum piston Forge BPVs (for 10,000 of the car's 13,700 miles).

I always wait until the oil is up to temp before any hard runs. Although I drive my car very easy, I do make WOT runs a few times a week.

TBB question biased for me because I changed mine out prophylactically.
S4 2.7T 6-speed manual

Dealer initially changed oil to 20w 50 and I changed it back after 3000 miles. I now have 29000 miles, and I think I will keep her for the long hall.

APR EMCS with stock, 1-bar and valet, but often run in stock program. Changed TBB as a prophylactic but no damage seen. Haven't checked the F-hose but will probably buy the MTM "hose". Plan to eventually upgrade to the APR GT25 turbos when they become available and I have the disposable income.

abt chip
S4 2.7T 6-speed manual

Turbo failure is not quite both. The passenger side wastegate control arm was bad, but the turbo itself was fine. The drivers side turbo had failed seals.

I have been chipped since 1k miles, at about 2k developed a light siren sound that has intensified with time but has held pretty much steady since about 10k miles. Car develops full boost according to VAG COM.

Turbos did not fail really, there was this chirping noise under acceleration. Dealer changed both turbos, chirping was gone for a while but it is back again. What gives?

S4 2.7T 6-speed manual

Turbos have made a variety of strange noises (mechanical whine from 8k-14k, BOV-like noise now) but i've experienced no loss in power, and no failure. I'm intending to upgrade to an AMS wrapped TBB though, just for safety's sake.
S4 2.7T 6-speed manual

I'm afraid to modify or change anything in fear of losing my warranty which was part of the reason for purchasing the car.

Opinion... Turbo Damage = 40% Driving style. 50% Maintenance checking oil/oil type, etc. 10% Turbo quality control at the factory.

I have not checked the TBB or the F-Hose for failures. The car seems to be running normal, hence I have not checked either for failures.

Think the "how hard do you usually run the engine?" question would be better phrased as a "what percentage of the time do you spend driving the S4 hard?", since pretty much everyone is gonna drive it hard at least some of the time! :-)
