Also lost a lower interclooler hose--blew off at track event. I use 5w40 synthetic more often than 5w30. My dealer uses 5w30 synthetic but I change oil every 2000 miles-or after any track events.

I'm not sure if I have synthetics or not. Whatever Audi put in it. I wait for the water temp to be 'normal' before driving faster. I wait for oil to be 'normal' before dropping the hammer.

Right hand turbo was the main failure, but when they went to replace they saw that the left hand turbo had a bad seal and was leaking oil into the intercooler.

In response to "How hard do you usually run the engine?" I checked normal, because that's how I *usually* drive. However, one of the reasons I bought this car is because of its performance, and I do drive in a performance oriented fashion often (W.O.T.), but not the majority of the time.

No regrets. Lets try the RS4 now.

I will be switching to Mobil 1 5w-30 for the winter.
But 15w-50 lubricates very well in the summer as long as you can wait for the engine to be up to temp before you drive hard.

i'm not sure if the turbo has failed. i do sometimes think the turbo has lost some power...it seems variable rather than consistent. sometimes if i run it hard at high speed on the highway for a while i feel a significant loss of power, and later it seems to come back at least somewhat. i'm not very technical with this stuff, just a feeling.

my car has 15,000 miles on it now. i have changed the oil every 3000 miles. petroleum up to 8000, and MOTUL 0W0-30 FULL synth after that. will get same at 15K. i do full warm-up and warm-down before/after driving.
never owned a chip, but helped test v2MTM unit.
i live in Denver, and the air here has been blamed for some turbo failures.
recent news indicates that some turbo problems with 2000 cars came as result of a shipping problem where some oil lines got bent.

I think the s4 is one of the greatest automobiles ever
made. I have driven m3,m5,mercedes,Ihave friends who own all of the above and they cant hold a candle to my s4.When I am not auto crossing or street racing(which i do regularly)I like to cruise around, the ride is just so sweet even with the KW coilovers.I do all of the goodies to my s4 (clean it 2 times a week, mobil 93, cool downs, warm ups, synthetic oil you name it no probs. yet..
As far as oil goes i used mobil 1 15w 50 for the first 2 oil changes then i tried red line 20w 50 at $8 a quart. I think i will go back to mobil. I can find no difference between the 2 mobil is cheaper and has not let me down in the 10 years i have used it..

My right side turbo did begin to make the siren sound. Knowing from these posts that that was a precondition to a possible failure I addressed this with my dealership. I switched out the chipped ECU for my stock one. They agreed the sound was not normal and replaced both turbos with the updated counterparts. It has only been 1500 miles since (car now has 9000 miles.) Car is running on chip power once again and doing fine.

I wasn't as cautious with the warm up prior to the turbo failure as I am now. I now wait until oil temp is above 175 before any spirited driving.
The Audi lead tech felt my failure was due more to lack of use (read sitting in Boston traffic and having the spindles cook with thier bearings)then from hard use.
They also replaced the right head (lost electrode), manifold (cracked), and wiring harness (bad firing) at the same time.
